Background, Closeup, Corn, Corn Background, Texture

Nothing says summer like a good ol’ game of Cornhole but I had never heard of it until this year. Now it is EVERYWHERE! I was at a steakhouse the other night and on one of the many TV’s in my sights was a Cornhole Tournament. ON TV! And the steakhouse thought it was big enough to captivate it’s customers to show on more than one TV!!

On Sale

Early into my discovery, not quite in the got-to-have-it stage, I saw a blow up version in the $1 section at Target beside the blow-up Horse Shoes and the blow-up Ring Toss. Cornhole has definitely “arrived” if it has a place in the front shelves of Target.

Corn?

Elite is looking into the game as something we could do at get togethers and job fairs and that kind of thing, so I thougt I should look into it a little further. Here is what I found. No one really knows when the game started but at one time the bags were filled with dried corn kernels. There are a couple of boards you throw these corn bags at and you are to get the 1 pound, 6” x 6” bag into this little 6” hole from about 30 feet away. Now this is beginning to look like it might be a little bit of a workout.

Shucker!

Scoring for Cornhole is pretty simple. 3 points if it gets in the hole, no matter how it gets there, and 1 if it lands on the board and stays there the whole inning (4 bags each team). (There are other versions of calculating the score so if you want to get really heavy into cornhole give google a hollar.) The real hoot is the terminology. One of the best moves in the game is to a Blocker. The bag sits right in front of the hole so your opponant either has to avoid it all together with a Swish directly into the hole or, if they are real talented, a Hooker around the bag and into the hole. You really don’t want a Corn Patty (weak and in the dirt not even reaching the board) or a Dirty Bag-touching or on the ground (no points even if it is on the board). My personal favorite is a Shucker. That’s the one that slides on the board tapping another bag, shoving it off the board. HA! That might just get me a retaliative Madden (violently throwing a bag at an opponant) and that would get the Police (referee) involved.

Challenge Accepted

So now that we have cleared up all the Cornfusion (disagreement in scoring) let’s play. This will be an easy going, ice breaking, friendly challenge type game. Here’s to many Cornucopias (all 4 in the hole) and few Screaming Eagles (shot right over the board)! Happy Cornholin’!
