Nursing is a demanding profession whether you are on the road or not. It’s easy to give in to the temptation to come home, put on yoga pants and crash in front the TV with some takeout. And many evenings, that’s exactly what you should do.
But once in a while, it’s fun to get out and see what your assignment location has to offer. After all, what’s the point in taking a travel assignment if you are not going to get out there and enjoy the local culture?
Here are some ideas that can help you to immerse yourself in your assignment location.
- Sure you spend all day helping people, but volunteering can help you to meet new people and get a sense of what the community is like while doing something good for people who can use the help. You can have a little fun, get out of the house and maybe get a little exercise in.
- Grab a local paper or check the internet for arts or food festivals throughout the area. You can enjoy everything from seasonal produce to craft fairs to live music. There is something for almost any interest. Try to focus on things you wouldn’t see back home.
Sports or Activities. Take advantage of your temporary home by trying sports or hobbies that are unique to the area. Learn to ski or paddleboard or cave, depending on your locale.
- Nearly any location will have state or national parks. Try hiking or camping or pack a picnic and eat your lunch there.
- Big, well known museums are a great way to spend a day and most big cities have at least one or two. But the most fun can be had at the quirky little museums that few have heard of. Make it a point to find out from the locals what their historic claim to fame is and check it out.
Tourist attractions. If you are in an area that vacationers frequent, fit in a few “staycation” activities. Hit the beach or river, go to an amusement park. If travelers go out of their way to get there, there must be something worth trying while you’re there.
